The ESSENCE Summer School offered courses in smart energy systems and online consultations with professors and experts from 10 institutions in the Erasmus+ ESSENCE project, including Grenoble INP (France), Riga Technical University (Latvia), Tomsk Polytechnic University (Russia), Irkutsk National Research Technical University (Russia), Ural Federal University (Russia), Kazan State Power Engineering University (Russia), North-Eastern Federal University (Russia), Technical University of Kosice (Slovakia), Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (Viet Nam) and Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG, Viet Nam). Students have been studying intensively and mastering in practice to resolve multidisciplinary tasks of the solar energy projects, then presented their solutions in a 10-minute presentation at the closing ceremony. A highly reputable international jury evaluated the performance of student teams. The ESSENCE Summer School was organized and hosted by Ural Federal University.

HUMG's competition team including students from the Faculty of Electro-Mechanic and the Faculty of Information Technology: Le Ngoc Linh (Computer Network K62), Nguyen Hong Trung (Software Technology K62), Vu Van Khai (Electrical Engineering K61), Pham Trung Nghia (Electrical Engineering K62), Nguyen Quang Hiep (Electrical Engineering K61) and Nguyen Tuan Phong (Electrical Engineering K61); under the mentoring of Dr. Le Xuan Thanh - Deputy Head of Electrification Department and Dr. Diem Cong Hoang - Head of Computer Network Department; brought to the competition a solution of optimizing the power system to limit power loss by applying algorithms and PSSE software. As the Summer School took place during the lastest COVID-19 outbreak in Vietnam, students did not have the opportunity to work in the university's laboratory with modern machines and software funded by the ESSENCE project. Mentors and students successfully overcome difficulties and completed the solving project's case.

Presentation of HUMG team
The presentation of the HUMG team impressed the judges with their professional knowledge and English skills. As a result, the HUMG team won a special prize from InteLAB LLC with an online internship. This award is an excellent opportunity for HUMG students to get acquainted with the international working environment and access the latest technologies in smart energy while improving their professional and technical knowledge and foreign language ability.

Prize awarded for HUMG team
The Erasmus+ ESSENCE project is a capacity-building project aimed to modernize the smart energy system curriculum at Russian and Vietnamese universities under the support of leading European universities in this area. At the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, the educational program of Electrical engineering has been upgraded and modernized, and a smart laboratory is equipped within this project. The ESSENCE Summer School is a pilot activity to evaluate the training effectiveness of the project, which ends in October 2021.
