International integration through the reception of international students at Hanoi University of Mining and Geology

07/07/2025

In the context of growing global efforts to internationalize higher education, the reception and implementation of programs for international students have become a strategic priority for many academic institutions. Aiming to foster a multicultural academic environment, expand international cooperation, and affirm its academic reputation in the region, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) has proactively launched a wide range of initiatives to attract international students to study, conduct research, and experience life in Vietnam.

Since the beginning of 2025, HUMG has welcomed more than 40 international students from three continents: Europe, Asia, and Africa. In contrast to previous years, when most international students primarily came from partner institutions in France and Japan, this year has seen a broader diversity of nationalities, including students from India, Indonesia, and several African countries. These students were placed in various faculties across the university to pursue study, internships, and research in disciplines ranging from traditional Earth science fields—such as Mining, Geosciences, Geomatics and Land Administration, Petroleum and Energy—to fast-growing areas including Electromechanics, Civil Engineering, Information Technology, Economics and Business Administration, and Environment.

At their respective academic departments, international students actively engaged in a wide range of academic activities, including thematic presentations, group discussions in English, laboratory sessions, and collaborative projects with HUMG students. These activities were conducted under the supervision of faculty members to ensure practical relevance and alignment with the students’ academic focus. Additionally, students participated in field trips to enterprises, research institutions, and real-world project sites to gain exposure to professional environments and apply theoretical knowledge in practice.

Beyond academics, the international student program at HUMG also placed strong emphasis on cultural and social experiences. Students visited historical and cultural landmarks in Hanoi and surrounding regions, and had the opportunity to accompany faculty members on excursions to explore Vietnam’s natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and local communities. These experiences helped foster a global mindset, enhance intercultural competence, and create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.

The success of HUMG’s international student program in early 2025 reaffirms the university’s organizational capacity, effective cross-departmental coordination, and long-term commitment to the internationalization of higher education. Looking ahead to 2026—marking HUMG’s 60th anniversary—the university aims to welcome at least 60 international students for study, internships, and research. This is not merely a numerical target, but a clear reflection of HUMG’s strategic vision to elevate academic standing, broaden global partnerships, and affirm its role as a modern, internationally connected, and sustainably developing university.
