HUMG Students Have Opportunity for Study in Poland

Representatives of AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Poland, visited the HUMG campus last week in efforts to strengthen cooperation between the universities. They are developing programs that will make it easier for HUMG students to attend university in Poland and to prepare themselves beforehand with courses in Polish and English at HUMG.

On Monday December 2nd, representatives of AGH along with the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange and of the Polish Embassy in Hanoi, attended meetings in frame of AGH Krakow Week in Viet Nam with the HUMG rector, university leaders, international affairs department, and students, to talk about deepening the relationship between Polish and Vietnamese institutions of higher learning.

Professors and administrators from AGH spoke with students, encouraging them to attend university in Poland, whether for a year as an undergraduate or for graduate studies. Alexsandra Izabella, from the AGH Department of International Relations, discussed financial help available for students, which includes full tuition, traveling expenses and even a living allowance, depending on the sort of aid received. They said that many of the scholarships received few applicants, and that HUMG students stood a good chance of receiving scholarships. 

They spoke about the exceptional quality of technical education provided by the university, whose graduates include the heads of many large corporations and high-ranking government officials. Many professors at the university have long experience in industry as well as teaching, and the research facilities and labs are first class. Research areas include IT, new materials and technology, environmental and climactic change, energy, mining, electrical and mechanical engineering, natural sciences and social sciences and humanities. AGH Professor Ewa Kmiecik delivered a presentation on “Monitoring of Groundwater Quality in Poland,” and discussed groundwater quality and issues with HUMG students and faculty.

Katarzyna Alicja Ciepiela, from the AGH Department of International Relations, spoke about student life in the picturesque and friendly historic Polish city of Krakow. Students will get to enjoy a wide variety of cultural events and festivals, historic buildings and museums, outdoor activities and sports facilities. They also will have access to comfortable housing on campus , among 7000 students in 20 dormitories, within walking distance to the main square and tram and bus connections throughout the city. With Poland’s location in central Europe, it is also an ideal location for students wanting to travel to other parts of the continent.

HUMG graduates Mr. To Huu Thang and Mr. Doan Manh Ha who also are alumni of AGH spoke about their experiences and took questions from students. “The experience completely changed things for me," said Trang To, who has studied in both Vietnam and Poland. “I opened up new ways of seeing the world and new opportunities.”

On Tuesday, HUMG worked with Polish university representatives to set up Polish classes for students who wish to study at AGH. Students can study in either Polish or English, but must have a certificate of competency and strong test scores in the language in which they want to take classes. HUMG also offers English courses and will prepare students for study in Poland with intensive classes in both English and Polish. 

AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow established the cooperation with Hanoi University of Mining and Geology in 1987. Since then, the two universities become reliable partners in education and research. Scholarship for master and doctoral degrees, staff mobility, students exchanges, join research projects are successful and longterm activities between the two organizations, highlighting the partnership in the last 35 years.
