As one of the world's first professional associations, SOMP is active in the academic community and is committed to contributing to the development of the mining industry. The main goal of the Society is to guarantee the scientific, technical, academic and professional knowledge required to ensure a sustainable supply of minerals for mankind. The Society facilitates information exchange, research and teaching partnerships and other collaborative activities among its members.
Up to now, SOMP has more than 250 members from more than 100 countries around the world. HUMG has members joining the Society since 2013, so far has contributed to many activities such as participating in the Capacity Building Committee, annual conferences, and Southeast Asia regional meetings. SOMP members have supported HUMG in many scientific activities such as short courses, exchange programs, joint research activities, joint publishing, and joint organization of international conference.
Regional meetings of SOMP is one initiative to enhance the exchange of knowledge, experience and update new technologies in Southeast Asia, South America, Russia, etc. 2022 is the 11th Regional Meeting of SOMP. This is also the second SOMP Regional Meeting in Vietnam, hosted by HUMG
SOMP Regional Meeting 2022 gathered 16 speakers (3 online from Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Thailand) delivering presentations and discussions in 4 working sessions and focused on 3 main topics:
1. Mining education in AsiaDigitalization in the mining industry
2. Digital transformation in the mining industry
3. Sustainable and responsible mining
After the meeting on 11th October 2022, the delegates had a field trip at Nui Phao Tungsten Mine on 12th October 2022
