The 7th International Conference Scientific-Research Cooperation between Vietnam and Poland (Pol-Viet 2023) was successfully held in Krakow, Poland

From October 18 to 20, 2023, Vietnamese and Polish partners gathered at AGH University in Krakow (Poland) and discussed at the 7th International Conference Scientific-Research Cooperation between Vietnam and Poland (Pol-Viet 2023).

The Pol-Viet / Viet-Pol Conference is an initiative of the His Magnificence Tadeusz Słomka – former Rector of the AGH University in Krakow since 2014, whereby AGH University in Krakow (AGH) and Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) alternately organize international conferences aiming to develop scientific research cooperation between Poland and Vietnam, and evaluate joint projects and initiatives of the two sides. Developing bilateral contacts in the field of education and cooperation with industry is also an essential aspect of the conference.

In 2023, the 7th Pol-Viet Conference was successfully held in Krakow, Poland. More than 100 delegates from the two countries met, exchanged knowledge, and discussed in 6 technical sessions and 4 discussion panels. Nearly 100 oral presentations and posters focusing on the traditional areas of cooperation of the two sides, including mines, geology, mining, metallurgy, environment, electromechanics, and energy, etc. were presented onsite and online. The Vietnamese delegation led by Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Hai – Rector of HUMG actively participated in all scientific sessions and discussion panels.

The conference was officially opened on October 18, 2023 with the opening speeches by Professor Jerzy Lis - Rector of AGH and Professor Tran Thanh Hai - Rector of HUMG. Delegates witnessed the signing ceremony of the bilateral agreement to exchange staff and students within the framework of the Erasmus+ program between the two universities. The Erasmus+ program KA1 has been implemented by both sides since 2016 and is one of the most successful cooperation programs between AGH and HUMG. With the signing of this Cooperation Agreement, the two institutions commit to continue maintaining and developing the Erasmus+ program in the coming years.

After the opening ceremony, the plenary session with the topic of Sustainable cooperation — support for science, research and mobility took place with the participation of Prof. Jerzy Lis, Prof. Tran Thanh Hai, Mr. Bartosz Stawiarz - Director of the Department for cooperation with regions, Erasmus+ Sport Department, Foundation for the Development of the Education System, and Dr. Zofia Sawicka - Deputy Director at Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA). The delegates gave their views on sustainable cooperation in scientific research between the two countries, affirming that support from institutions and from funds such as Erasmus+ and NAWA makes great contributions to scientists in connecting and taking advantage of the strengths of the parties to turn ideas into joint research projects.

On the first day of the conference, a discussion panel also took place to introduce the Polish-Vietnamese Tropical Research Centre (organized in cooperation with the University of Warsaw). Pol-Viet/Viet-Pol is a premise for deeper and more specific cooperation ideas between the two countries, with the expansion of partners on both sides. The establishment of the Vietnam - Poland Tropical Research Center is a clear example.

The third discussion panel taking place on October 19, 2023 focused on Polish-Vietnamese cooperation — good practices at AGH University. Speakers from both sides reviewed important milestones in the history of Vietnam - Poland cooperation, especially academic exchange cooperation, impacts and benefits that the Erasmus+ and UNESCO programs bring to the universities, staff and students.

In addition, delegates from businesses participated in a discussion panel with the topic: Sustainable and Responsible Industry, which committed to close cooperation with universities to improve training quality, promoting research cooperation and technology transfer, protect the environment and implement community responsibility.

On October 18 and 19, 2023, five technical sessions in the hybrid format and a poster session took place in parallel. 40 papers have been selected for publication in the Scopus journal of the Polish Mineral Engineering Society - Inżynieria Mineralna.

On October 20, 2023, delegates had a field trip to the ZGH Bolesław Olkusz, a producer of Special High-Grade Zinc and its products, which was also an opportunity to promote university and industry linkage, exchange experiences and professional knowledge, and connect industry of the two countries.

The highlight of the event was the awarding ceremony of the Medal for the Cause of education of Vietnam to Prof. Jerzy Lis - Rector of AGH University solemnly held at the gala dinner on October 19. To acknowledge the contributions of Prof. Jerzy Lis to the education of Vietnam in the fields of mining and geology over the years, the Minister of Education and Training of Vietnam decided to award him the Medal for the Cause of education of Vietnam. Previously, in 2017, Professor Tadeusz Słomka - former Rector of AGH University also received this honor.

Following the success of previous conferences, the Pol-Viet 2023 conference took place in an atmosphere of lively discussions, exchanging experiences, and planning for the future. Besides the newly established relationships, there are touching reunions between friends after many years.
