International Seminar with Canadian Experts on Sustainable and Responsible Mining

On March 6, 2025, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) welcomed Madam Louise Michaud – Deputy Minister of Advanced Education of Saskatchewan, Canada, and held in thematic seminar on Sustainable and Responsible Mining. The event was attended by representatives from the Saskatchewan Office in Vietnam, as well as universities from Saskatchewan, including the University of Regina, the University of Saskatchewan, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

On March 6, 2025, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) welcomed Madam Louise Michaud – Deputy Minister of Advanced Education of Saskatchewan, Canada, and held in thematic seminar on Sustainable and Responsible Mining. The event was attended by representatives from the Saskatchewan Office in Vietnam, as well as universities from Saskatchewan, including the University of Regina, the University of Saskatchewan, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

On behalf of HUMG, Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Hai – Rector and Vice Rectors - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Vinh and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khanh, extended a warm reception to the delegation in the But Thap Meeting Room. Following this, the seminar titled “Sustainable and Responsible Mining” took place in the Pho Yen Meeting Room, attracting significant interest from faculty members, researchers, and experts in the mining industry.

The seminar featured four key presentations discussing contributions from Canada and Vietnam in sustainable and responsible mining, rare earth research in Vietnam, and Canada’s energy transition experience. First, Prof. Raman Paranjape, Associate Dean of Research at the Faculty of Engineering, the University of Regina, presented on sustainable and responsible mining in Saskatchewan, emphasizing the necessity of modern technology adoption and effective management solutions to minimize environmental impacts in mining activities. Next, Dr. To Xuan Ban, Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences and Geological Engineering at HUMG, delivered a report on rare earth resources in Vietnam and the university's research directions, highlighting sustainable methods for rare earth mining and processing. Following that, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Hoai Nga, a representative of the Key Research Group Innovations for Sustainable and Responsible Mining (ISRM) at HUMG, shared new insights into sustainable mining in Vietnam, focusing on the integration of smart technology to reduce environmental impact and enhance efficiency. Finally, Mr. Rick Musleh, Director of Sustainable Energy Investment at the Ministry of Trade and Export Development, Government of Saskatchewan, provided insights into Saskatchewan’s energy transition experience, emphasizing policy support, energy storage technologies, and international cooperation in developing a sustainable energy system.

The seminar marked a significant milestone in the collaboration between HUMG and its Canadian partners, paving the way for future research and educational cooperation.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Hai emphasized the significance of international collaboration in research and education and expressed HUMG’s commitment to strengthening ties with universities and research institutions in Canada in the years ahead.
