As part of its efforts to strengthen international cooperation, in March 2025, a HUMG delegation led by Rector Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Hai visited several universities, research institutes, and enterprises in Japan. The visit opened up numerous practical cooperation opportunities in education, student recruitment, technology transfer, and energy research. These strategic ties not only helped improve the quality of HUMG’s training and research but also affirmed the university’s proactive role in the global network of education and science.

A highlight of the academic cooperation between HUMG and Japanese universities has been the series of international scientific events regularly co-hosted in Vietnam. One notable example is GIS-IDEAS – a prestigious conference series focusing on the application of GeoInformatics and ICT in spatial infrastructure development and earth sciences. First held in Hanoi in 2002, the conference is expected to be hosted by HUMG for the 23rd time in 2026. This event has significantly promoted interdisciplinary academic exchange and the application of technology in resource management. Additionally, the thematic seminar on slope engineering, jointly organized by HUMG, Yamaguchi University, and the Japan Landslide Society, brought together dozens of experts from both countries in the fields of geotechnics and disaster prevention. The focus was on slope stability, landslide warning systems, and sustainable infrastructure design. These academic activities not only facilitated research sharing but also promoted applied cooperation and expanded expert networks in socially impactful areas.

Beyond academic forums, research collaboration between HUMG and Japanese institutes, universities, and development organizations achieved significant milestones. Notably, Prof. Yasushi Watanabe (Institute for Geo-Resources and Environment, Japan) participated in a national-level key research group led by HUMG, focusing on the potential of rare earths and strategic minerals. Together with Vietnamese scientists, the Japanese experts aimed to develop raw material zones to support high-tech industries. Furthermore, recent engagements with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) opened up promising possibilities for joint technical assistance and human resource development programs. These collaborations have underscored HUMG’s active role in academic networking and knowledge transfer for nationally significant initiatives.

In the area of education and human resource exchange, dozens of HUMG students received scholarships to study at partner institutions such as Kyushu, Hokkaido, Akita, Shibaura, and Fukui Universities. The university also regularly hosted Japanese students for internships and cultural exchange programs, contributing to a multidimensional academic environment and promoting the internationalization of education. Many HUMG lecturers completed or are pursuing postgraduate studies in Japan, thereby enhancing their academic expertise and fostering sustainable academic linkages between institutions.

Collaboration with Japanese enterprises has played a vital role in HUMG’s strategy to develop high-quality human resources. Engineer employment programs in Japan, supported by reputable partners such as Technobrige NKE and Open Up Group, have provided HUMG students with access to international labor markets. Japanese companies have also actively participated in training activities, career orientation, and academic competitions at HUMG — not only as a testament to their trust in the university’s training quality, but also as a means to strengthen cooperation between academia and industry.

With a vision of sustainable development and deep international integration, HUMG remains committed to expanding cooperation with Japanese partners in both breadth and depth. Through effective linkages in training, research, and technology transfer, the university affirms its position as a reliable strategic partner in educational and scientific collaboration, contributing to the shared development of Vietnam and Japan in the era of globalization.
