Erasmus+ CBHE Project ESSENCE

06/02/2018

Project “Establishing smart energy system curriculum at Russian and Vietnamese universities (ESSENCE)” is an Erasmus+ Capacity Building project in the field of Higher Education funded by EACEA and is held in 36 months, from October 2017 to October 2020.

The project consortium is composed of 10 universities from 5 countries and 1 associated partner, all members possessing extensive expertise in project area to guarantee the project implementation and ensure project sustainability. 10 academic partners of the project are:

From EU: Riga Technical University (RTU-Latvia) – project leader, Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble (Grenoble INP - France), Technical University of Košice (TUKE-Slovakia);

From Russia: Irkutsk National Research Technical University (INRTU), Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), Ural Federal University (UrFU), Kazan State Power Engineering University (KSPEU), North-Eastern Federal University (NEFU);

From Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) and Hanoi University of Mining and Geology.

The associated partner involving in this project is Siemens Moskva.

The overall aim of ESSENCE project is to modernize master level curriculum in smart energy systems (SES) at Russian and Vietnamese universities in close cooperation with industry and in accordance with European Qualification Framework. Within the framework of the project core curriculum will be developed to be embedded into existing master programmes and implemented during the third year of the project life.

Along with the overall aim, a number of specific objectives will be achieved:

- To enhance professional competence of partner countries universities teachers and enhance networking amongst the participating universities;

- To enhance collaboration with industrial enterprises as the main stakeholders for their involvement into education process and design of stakeholders oriented curriculum on the basis of European experience;

-  To enhance the employability of university graduates;

- To boost internationalisation processes in Russian and Vietnamese universities via increase of number of incoming students and visiting professors; increase of availability of study abroad programmes for students; offer more opportunities for university staff for mobility and cooperation; increase of number of programmes designed in accordance to world standards; raise awareness and involvement of top management;

- To create necessary similarities in differing European, Russian and Vietnamese master degree programmes enabling academic mobility between consortium members and smooth recognition of study results obtained at partner universities.

The project plans 7 work packages to deliver the project objectives:

WP1: Preparation: assessment visits of EU experts to Russian and Vietnamese partners, situation analysis, selection and assignment of courses;

WP2: Curriculum development: development of syllabi, teaching materials, and identification of lab equipment for courses selected and assigned under WP1;

WP3: Development_Training is performed in curriculum development, course content and teaching methodology in line with EU qualification frameworks;

WP4: Development_Pilot implementation: participation of partners in the summer school;

WP5: Quality Plan: Development of methodology for peer-review; peer-review of courses; development of questionnaires for pilot implementation assessment; analysis of curriculum pilot implementation; assurance visits; development of quality assurance activities for the future;

WP6: Dissemination and exploitation: development of project’s website; dissemination its results within and outside the consortium as well as undertaking measures to exploit the project results and make them sustainable;

WP7: Management: development of project manual; financial and progress reporting; day-to-day coordination, coordination meetings and kick-off.

Being an active partner of project, HUMG takes responsibility to develop 2 courses within the framework of existing master programme in electrical power engineering and peer-review 2 courses. Through the project, the University has the opportunity to strengthen staff capacity and expand the network of cooperation with institutions and businesses in the field of energy, and thereby promote the participation of industry in the education activities of the University and improve the training quality. Modernisation of the electrical engineering master's degree programme according to European standards will facilitate further cooperation in joint training programmes/dual degree programmes and student exchange programmes with partners in the consortium.
