Hanoi University of Mining and Geology strengthens cooperation in education and research in France

09/07/2026

From 6 to 8 July 2026, a delegation from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG), led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Truong, President of HUMG, visited France for a series of working sessions aimed at strengthening relations with long-standing partners and expanding cooperation in postgraduate education, scientific research, technology transfer and academic exchange.

As part of the visit, the delegation held a working session with Mines Saint-Étienne, one of HUMG’s long-standing partners. The delegation was welcomed by Prof. Dr. Jacques Fayolle, Director of Mines Saint-Étienne, together with members of the institution’s leadership and representatives of its academic units.

The HUMG delegation held a working session with Mines Saint-Étienne.

At the working session, the two sides discussed new directions for cooperation, focusing on the joint development of master’s programmes in Chemical Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. The proposed programmes are expected to integrate postgraduate education with research and applications of emerging technologies, while contributing to the development of high-quality human resources to meet the demands of digital transformation in industrial production.

The two sides also discussed a proposal to establish a carbon capture and storage (CCS) laboratory. The proposed laboratory would support education and research, as well as the development of technological solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, advance the energy transition and promote sustainable development.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Truong, President of HUMG, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Quang Duyen, Dean of the Faculty of Petroleum and Energy, visited the CCS laboratory at Mines Saint-Étienne.

The two universities also agreed to expand exchanges of academic staff, students and researchers; promote study and internship programmes; jointly supervise graduate students; and coordinate the implementation of joint research projects and activities. These initiatives will provide a foundation for broader academic cooperation, improved research effectiveness and more opportunities for staff and students from both institutions to engage in an international academic environment.

During the visit, the delegation met with Vietnamese scientists and HUMG alumni living, studying and working in France. The discussions focused on building expert networks, supporting education and training, promoting research collaboration, and strengthening links between HUMG and universities, research institutes and businesses in France.

The meeting helped maintain ties between HUMG and generations of alumni while also creating opportunities to strengthen the University’s network of experts and academic collaborators in France. Drawing on their professional experience and knowledge of the local context, Vietnamese academics and alumni can serve as effective bridges, helping HUMG connect with partners, establish research groups and advance substantive cooperation programmes.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Truong, President of HUMG, and Prof. Jean-Michel Herri of Mines Saint-Étienne met with and offered encouragement to graduates of HUMG’s Advanced Programme in Chemical Engineering who were pursuing further studies at Mines Saint-Étienne.

The delegation also held a working session with the Embassy of Viet Nam in France. At the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Truong presented HUMG’s development priorities, strengths in education and scientific research, and international cooperation activities. The discussions focused on strengthening links between HUMG and higher education institutions, research institutes, enterprises, experts and the Vietnamese intellectual community in France. The two sides agreed to enhance coordination and draw on the Embassy’s role as a bridge to support HUMG in expanding its network of partners and advancing cooperation programmes in education and research.

Vietnamese Ambassador to France Trinh Duc Hai received the HUMG delegation for a working session in Paris.

The visit further strengthened the foundation for long-term cooperation between HUMG and its partners in France while opening new avenues for collaboration in education, scientific research and technology transfer. The outcomes of the visit will support the University in gradually implementing specific cooperation programmes, mobilising international resources, improving the quality of education and strengthening research capacity, thereby contributing to the internationalisation of education.
