In the opening speech, Prof. Tran Thanh Hai – the Rector of HUMG emphasized the important achievements of the University in the past year, particularly the efforts of the entire HUMG community to deliver teaching and learning throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the difficulties, it was also an honour to proudly receive the university accreditation rating of 4 out of 5 stars for the research-oriented University from University Performance Metrics rating system (UPM) that affirms the reputation of HUMG in the country and the region.

The academic year of 2020 – 2021 will be an important milestone celebrating 55th anniversary of HUMG. The university continues moving forwards with opportunities and challenges, preparing for its autonomy. We do hope that our students will well perform 6 tasks: Correct awareness of morality, sense of discipline and compliance with the law; Proactively build good study plans; Nourishing passion for learning and scientific research; Quickly adapt to new learning and research methods; Improve English and other foreign languages; Accumulate skills.
On this occasion, the Rector launched the activity "HUMG Entrepreneurship" 2021, the 34th Student Scientific Research Contest, the university-level Olympics competition 2020-2021, and other action programs of Youth Union, Student Union. He took this opportunity to wish all students at HUMG the greatest success in the coming academic year.

At the ceremony, representatives of HUMG’s industrial partners also donated for the University's Study Promotional Fund to support disadvantaged students overcome difficulties, create the better learning, research and creative environment for students. One of the sponsors, Nui Phao Mining Company Limited, is holding 2000 staff in which 2/3 graduated from HUMG in the fields of mining, geology, mineral processing, metallurgy and environment. Representing Nui Phao, Mr Vo Tien Dung – Director of External Relations, Community and Environment confirmed to continuously develop the cooperation with the University in training, internships and recruiting high-quality human resources.

Also, in the opening ceremony of the new school year, HUMG rewarded valedictorians with top results in the 2020 graduation as well as freshmen with distinct results in the 2020 enrollment, students with outstanding academic and training achievements in 2019-2020, and encouraged disadvantaged students with promotional funding. Three international students were selected to be awarded from 86 regular students of HUMG from Laos, Cambodia, Mongolia and China. They are Mr Phenglilerm Sensousit, Mr Souliphone Yanxana and Mr Mey Kadun. These awards are to recognize the tremendous efforts of our students and to motivate them to be more confident on their journeys.
