Since the first competition, ESC has drawn the attention of a great number of students at Hanoi University of Mining and Geology. The students all have chances to improve English proficiency in class through reading, writing, speaking and listening exercises. But taking English learning outside of the classrooms, beyond school books and homework should be a lifelong process. ESC is an event aiming to form the leaders and innovators of tomorrow by getting students involved in prominent social issues while practicing their English speaking skill. Indeed, ESC has successfully promoted English language learning in our university, made this subject become more interesting and raised students’ awareness of social problems as well.
This year, under the theme “HUMG Students and Covid-19 Pandemic”, one of the hottest and most controversial topics nowadays, the third English Speaking Contest 2021 really offered a good opportunity for students to express not only their talents in language and public speaking but also a sense of social responsibility. Through various challenges, students could showcase their presentation and debating skills, and more important, teamwork and critical thinking skill.
The twelve contestants in the Finale on 28th April 2021 demonstrated excellently on the stage winning admiration from an audience of hundreds in the hall. More than a mere competition, English Speaking Contest has proved to be one of the most expected intellectual event at HUMG, and a true festival for those who are and will always be in love with English.
