In order to explore the potential and mechanism of geosciences cooperation between China and Vietnam, a meeting on Discussion on Future Cooperation between Chengdu Center of China Geological Survey (CD-CGS) and Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) was held on 13th October, 2019, at HUMG in Ha Noi. Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Hai, the Rector of HUMG and Dr. Li Wenchang, Director General of CD-CGS chaired the meeting with the participation of delegations of HUMG and CD-CGS.

The meeting was fruitful and has reached some agreements on future cooperation in geoscience, according to the two leaders, Prof. Tran Thanh Hai and Dr. Li Wenchang.

CD-CGS and HUMG agree to enhance relationship, maintain high-level exchanges, and strengthen dialogue and consultation between the two sides, through the platforms including the China-ASEAN Mining Cooperation Forum and the Lancang-Mekong Geosciences Cooperation Forum in Chengdu, China.

The two side will exchange views on common concern of geoscience cooperation, including regional geology and resource environmental issues, maintain communication and coordination on scientific coperation project implementation, promote regional geoscience cooperation projects, and formulate the strategy of geoscience cooperation development.

CD-CGS and HUMG also plan agree to renew the Memorandum of Understanding on Geosciences in the Lancang-Mekong Geosciences Cooperation Forum, which will take place in Chengdu, China in March 2020 and set up joint projects focus on aspects of mutual interest. Some topics are discussed, including tectonic evolution of Eastern Tethys in Vietnam, joint comparative research on the metallogency on main metallogenic belts in China and Viet Nam as well as other potential geological problems to be identified and agreed upon by the two sides.

CD-CGS will help young geologists from HUMG to apply for the scholarship and to finish Master/PhD degree in China Universities with reputation in geology and mining, supporting HUMG in exchange visit of leaders, and scholars to promote the long term training program at high level between the two sides.

The two organizations also support the ideas of an establishment of the "China-ASEAN Geoscience Cooperation Center" (CAGCC) with other geological organizations from other ASEAN member states.

By the end of the meeting, HUMG delegations received the invitation from CD-CGS to participate the “Lancang-Mekong Geosiciences Cooperation Forum which is held in March 2020 in Chengdu, China.
