On 19th November 2020, in Pho Yen Meeting Room, Prof. Tran Thanh Hai, Vice Rector of Hanoi University of Mining and Geology welcomed distinguished speakers and guests of the 4th International Conference on Economic Management in Mineral Industry. This year, from 52 abstracts there are 47 full papers submitted. More than one hundred participants from Australia, Brazil, India, Germany, Peru, Poland, Thailand, the USA and Vietnam with professional background of higher education, industry, research institutes, media, state authorities and NGOs were participating in the conference.

Keynote speakers Prof. Jürgen Kretschmann, President of THGA Bochum, nad Mr. Vu Hong, Deputy General Director of Nui Phao Mining Company were focussing on a similar topic of principles of transparency regarding benefits of the community in mining areas by the two presentations titled "Challenges and solutions of a sustainability – orientated post-mining in Germany” by Prof. Kretschmann and “The communication for sustainable development – a case of Nui Phao Mine” by Mr. Vu Hong,

Four sesions were arranged during the conference. The session one Sustainable development in the mining industry chaired by Prof. Kretschmann and Prof. Laurence (University of New South Wales, UNSW, Australia). In this session, many aspects of sustainable development in the mining industry was mentioned, such as: occupational safety and health, capacity building, land-use conflict, social license and environmental forecasting. These presentations were very much attractive to the audience with questions and discussion. The session two focused on corporate social responsibility, chaired by Dr. rer. nat. Sakamornsnguan (Deutschland Alumni from RWTH Aachen) and Prof. Nguyen Ngoc Khanh (HUMG). The session three is a session of natural resources policy, creating an exciting discussion among speakers and the audience. The session, chaired by Dr. Bui Thi Thu Thuy (HUMG) and Prof. Anna Luiza Marques Ayres da Silva (University of Sao Paolo, Brazil), mentioned issues of natural resources from minerals to water to gas and energy. Additionally is a poster session with 6 presentations.
Organized since 2013, now EMMA becomes an important conference in field of economic management in mineral activities, connecting multi-disciplines of the mining industry and auxiliary disciplines. Participants of EMMA conferences can strengthen networking in collaboration of teaching and researching in mining, especially mining management. The event is now a trustful event of educators, researchers, institutes, NGOs and the industry, in which strong commitment for better education and training, experience and knowledge transfer among stakeholders are confirmed.

EMMA 4 Organizing Committee is thankful with the sponsorship and support from DAAD (German Academic Exchange), VINACOMIN (Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industry Holding Corporation Limited), VIMLUKI (Vietnam National Institute of Mining-Metallurgy Science and Technology), and Nui Phao Mining. Nui Phao is now the most modern solid mine in Viet Nam and the second largest tungsten mine in the world. Nui Phao is one of the best practice in sustainble development in mining and they show their qualified outcomes in the field trip of EMMA, on 20th November 2019.
